MIGRANT STUDENTS DON’T LET OBSTACLES STOP THEM

By Editor Ken Harvey

Hurbita Ruiz came to the U.S. just three years ago so her mother could receive better cancer treatment, but to no avail.

Hurbita Ruiz"She died six months after we came to the U.S.," explains the Davis High School senior. "It was very hard for me, but with my family and God’s help I have been able to focus on my future."

Living now with her older brother, his family and a younger sister, Hurbita misses the rest of her family still living in Mexico. That, too, has been difficult, but, she says, "I have to be strong for my younger sister."

Another challenge Hurbita faced when she arrived three years ago was learning a different language, as do most migrant students.

"I didn’t even know a word," she says. "I worked hard in order to overcome this obstacle, and now I’m happy because I’ve learned English -- and I’m proud of it."

Despite these obstacles, Hurbita has a near-perfect 3.97 grade point average (GPA), is looking forward to going to college next year, and wants to become a lawyer.

"With this career I will be able to help Hispanics who don’t speak English," she says. Hurbita also has goals of traveling the world to such places as England and Jerusalem. "I have faith in God that my long-term goals are going to come true."

Hurbita is involved in a number of school and community activities. In addition she helps senior citizens clean up their yards and teaches a Bible class on Sundays.

Hurbita is one of 330 students featured in this year’s Washington State Exemplary Migrant Student Yearbook.

"These students were invited to share their life stories and goals with us because they are role models for younger students, and they have worked hard to achieve high academic standards," says Dr. Jane M. Gutting, superintendent of Educational Service District 105 in Yakima.

"The migrant students showcased in our Exemplary Student Year Book represent the best of what America has always stood for. Each of them faced incredible personal challenges on so many levels and yet, through their own perseverance, has succeeded where too many have not," says Dr. Richard Gómez Jr., the state’s Migrant Education Director.

"Each of these young adults embraced the help of dedicated teachers, home visitors, principals, and countless others within the Washington migrant program family, who, in turn, partnered with the students’ own family of moms, dads, siblings, grandparents and others to collectively support their children’s academic success," says Dr. Gomez. "With that, come true choices for planning the rest of their lives."

Another of the exemplary students is Hernan Lemus, who graduated from Eastmont High School last spring with a 3.72 GPA. He is now enrolled at Central Washington University, with the goal of becoming an architect.

Hernan Lemus"I like working with computers and designing houses," he says.

Hernan came to the United State at age 14 and also faced a huge language barrier.

"I knew no English when I started going to school," he says, "I was having a lot of trouble with my homework in classes when I didn’t understand. Last year, I had classes that required hours of homework. I was determined to do well in those classes, and I put a lot of effort into them to earn good grades."

Hernan’s 3.72 GPA suggests he handled his challenges very well.

After Hernan becomes an architect, he has one major goal "to help my parents economically. I want to give back to them some of the support they have given me."

His parents still work the orchards, picking apples, cherries and pears. He likes the idea of building his parents a new home someday.

He also wants to help his two younger sisters and younger brother to get through college. "I would like them to go to college so they can get a better job and not have to work in the orchards," he says.

Hernan has participated in many extracurricular activities, including the State Migrant Student Leadership Conference. "It made me believe you can achieve whatever you want – you just have to work at it."

Mercedes Martinez, a senior at Sunnyside High School, wants to become a U.S. senator someday, and it’s easy to believe she can do it.

Merc MartinezShe already is very service-oriented. She participates in SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and is one of seven students participating in the Lower Valley Youth Advisory RUD (Reducing Underage Drinking) Committee.

She wants to help youth understand "you don’t have to do drugs and alcohol to be happy," she says. In this and in other ways, "I want to be a good influence on children. I would like to bring more awareness to kids all around the world and let them know there is help out there."

It was while going to a national anti-drug and alcohol conference last January that Mercedes began thinking about a life in public service.

"It got me pumped," she says. "People up there said, ‘You would make a good senator.’"

With her 3.88 GPA and very positive attitude, Mercedes doesn’t think she’s had any serious obstacles in her life. Only with some prodding does she admit it was difficult when her family first moved from Mexico to Ohio.

"It was hard. No one spoke Spanish," she concedes. But she appreciated the one-on-one assistance a Catholic nun provided to teach her English.

Mercedes says she has only had "small hills" to overcome, compared to obstacles of many migrant students. "My parents have always been there for me," she says. Her father currently supports the family by working in construction.

Mercedes plans to major in business administration.

AlejandroAlejandro Lopez-Bautista, a senior at Ilwaco Jr/Sr High School (3.09 GPA), wants to pursue a career in architecture. "My dream is to have my own business," he says. "One of the biggest obstacles I have had to overcome was leaving my studies in Mexico to come to the United States. When I arrived, I started working in agriculture. It was then I realized I needed to go back to school. All of my classes are in English, and I must work extra hard to earn good grades."

Dianely AcevedoDianely Acevedo, a senior at Davis High School in Yakima (3.84 GPA), wants to be a pediatrician. "I would like to help sick children and be useful to my community," she says.

The language barrier is one of the obstacles she is trying to overcome. "I don’t want English to be a barrier when I go to college," she says. "I try to practice English everyday, when going to school, doing my homework, reading books, and watching TV."

Magali Ambriz, a senior last year at Toppenish High School (3.42 GPA), plans to major in business administration.

"Living in poverty for as long as I can remember has demonstrated to me the importance of an education," she says. "I want to be a role model for my younger siblings and for my community.

"The biggest obstacle I faced was learning a new language," she says. "Even though it has been a struggle these past four years, I refused to let the challenges stop me from pursuing my dream."

Jessica Arreola, a senior last year at Walla Walla High School (3.73 GPA), is planning a career in teaching.

"I want to help future generations, including students who don’t speak English," she says. "I want to help children to reach their dreams, the same way some of my teachers have done for me."

Lupe Carrillo, a senior at Kiona-Benton High School (3.95), wants to major in politics/government at college. "My ultimate goal is to be a very influential figure in politics and government.

"I have overcome the opinions of others, those who say ‘you can’t.’ I have surpassed peer-pressure that only leads to failure. My family and I have overcome many losses in order to pursue the American Dream. The hardships I have undergone have only fueled my ambition and fed my desire to succeed."

Guadalupe ContrerasGuadalupe Contreras, a senior at Pasco High School (3.94 GPA), wants "to go to Eastern University to become a dentist, help people, and go to other countries representing a social gospel group and talking about God and his love for all of us."

Blanca Diaz, a senior last year at Mabton High School (3.56 GPA), says, "I am the first girl in my family to pursue education, and a lot is expected of me. I am glad I have these expectations because then I can accomplish my goal by attending college. After this, my future will open many doors for me.

"I have learned through my parents the hardships that many people face in this world. I was taught this by working since I was in the sixth grade. I remember those hot and backbreaking days in the summer when it was 102 degrees and sweat would run down your body. This helped me realize to take advantage of my education because without an education you’ll get nowhere," she says.

Israel Gonzalez, a senior last year at Highland High School (3.37 GPA), plans to major in political science and work at the White House. "Some of the major obstacles I still need to overcome are my broken family and an alcoholic parent. I have a family of 10, which puts a lot of strain on my family’s finances."

Miguel MunguiaMiguel Munguia, a senior at Highland High School (3.63 GPA), plans to go to a technical school to study auto mechanics. "When I was in Mexico, I used to live on a very poor ranch. My father didn’t go to this ranch very often. I came to the United States because my father and mother were already here with Rosa, my sister, who had cancer and died 8 years later. I was in Mexico, along with my sister and a brother, with my Aunt Maria for about 5 years. Although she took good care of us, it was not as good as being with my mother. All my family finally united in 1998, and my sister and brother and I started going to school."

Estela Ortiz, a senior at Pasco High School (3.93 GPA), wants to become a business teacher and learn more about computers. "The biggest hardship for me was to change my culture and language. My family was a kind of obstacle because it was hard to separate from them and come to the U.S. And despite many obstacles and hardships, I will keep going ahead."

Eduardo Pedroza, a senior last year at Prosser High School (3.86 GPA), wants to study police science. "I had to learn how to speak and write English so that I could do well in my classes. Another obstacle was to meet new people and make new friends."

Lupe RiosGuadalupe Rios, a senior last year at Davis High School (3.50 GPA), believes with a college education, "broad opportunities will come knocking at my door, and I will be prepared."

The talented young man has many interests. "Music, architecture and government are the three main fields of study I’m interested in. Though different, I plan to learn as much as I can about them. ‘The only way to predict the future is by inventing it,’" he quotes.

Emmanuel Sanchez of Granger High School (3.83 GPA) planned to graduate from high school and community college at the same time through the Running Start program. He wants to get a bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree in astronomy. "I had to learn English in two years in order to keep up with my classes," he says. While going to high school and college simultaneously, he also worked part-time and donated time at the Food Bank.

Guadalupe HernandezGuadalupe Hernandez, a recent graduate from Eastmont High School (3.40), plans to work part-time while attending Wenatchee Valley College this fall, then transfer to Central Washington University to pursue a master’s degree in business and computer science. She was a student representative to the Migrant Education State Advisory Committee.

Anna Martinez, a senior at Warden High School (3.41 GPA), wants to go into medicine. "Every other year my family goes down to Mexico, and sometimes it’s hard for me to keep my grades up. But I have been able to overcome this obstacle."

María Mora, a senior at Wenatchee High School (3.84 GPA), wants to become "a great teacher" of kindergarten. "Since I came from Mexico, I didn’t know how to speak (English) or write it, but now I’m learning it in school."

Fabian Pulido, a senior at Wenatchee High School (3.77 GPA), wants to study automobile engineering and maybe start his own shop or business. "Most of my life I have had to battle being from a Mexican family. I experienced racism in school and also some in sports. I am happy to say that I didn’t let that hold me down."

Amanda Short, a senior last year at Entiat High School (3.95 GPA), wants to major in elementary education at Washington State University. "I have overcome the early death of my mother. Ever since her passing, I have wanted to make her proud, and have done so. My father raised my two brothers and me alone and brought us up to the best of his ability."

Claudia Vergara, a junior at Connell High School (4.00 GPA), wants to major in business or medicine. "I have moved to many different schools. But I know that if I apply all my efforts into my education, I will be successful," she says.

Tanya Castellón, a senior at Lynden High School (3.68 GPA), is ASB vice president. "One of the hardest things I have learned to accept is a sense of who I am. Throughout my childhood I grew up in a culture and society that I wanted to be a part of," she says. "I felt like I wasn’t completely accepted. Yet, today I am one who does not think twice about saying, ‘Soy Mexicana,’ and knowing I can still be American. I have grown to be proud of my roots and culture. I have learned English without losing my Spanish."

Yanet Escobar, a senior last year at Centralia High School (3.10 GPA), wants to go to college and get her CNA and LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) certification. "One obstacle I have overcome has been being a mother and a wife while finishing school," she says.

Maria Navarrete, a senior at Shelton High School (3.14 GPA), wants to go to college to learn computer technology. "My parents died when I was a toddler, so I have no mother or father. Moving to the U.S. at such a late age and living with my bother has been hard," she says. "I want to make my family proud of me."

Elsa Nayeli Sandoval, a senior last year at Centralia High School (3.31 GPA), wants to first graduate from Centralia Beauty College, then work toward a bachelor’s degree in education, becoming an ESL teacher. "Even though there have been obstacles in my life, I have learned valuable lessons from them, and I have become a better person," she says.
